Overview of circRNA
Circular RNA (Circular RNA, CircRNA) is a type of non-coding RNA molecules without a 5' end cap and a 3' terminal poly (A) tail, with a covalent bond to form a ring structure. It is mainly located in the cytoplasm or stored in exosomes. It is not affected by exonuclease, and is more stable in expression and not easy to degrade.
CircRNA is tissue-specific, disease-specific, and time-series-specific, as well as structurally stable and evolutionarily conserved. Studies have shown that circRNA plays important biological functions both inside and outside the nucleus. Within the nucleus, it mainly affects the transcription of its parent gene and regulates the splicing of its linear homologous transcripts; in the cytoplasm, it not only acts as a miRNA sponge, but also functions through binding proteins. Researches in recent years have shown that circRNA can translate functional polypeptide/proteins.
